Apparently, one lasts about 10 minutes in the ocean (in the summer) without a wetsuit. Great white&#8217;s rarely come up past the southern tip of Vancouver Island and any rouge shark that&#8217;s lost its way will probably be eaten by an orca. However, we do have many big sharks off the coast of BC; but there has been zero reports of any attacks on humans in history\u2014<strong>zero<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sharks are vital to the health of the BC Coast. <\/strong>Common sharks in BC waters include: the salmon shark (10 feet) , Pacific sleeper shark (14-feet),\u00a0six gill shark (16-feet), brown cat shark, blue shark (10-feet), spiny dogfish (5-feet) and the\u00a0tope (soup fin) shark (6.5-feet).<\/p>\n<p>Rare to B.C. waters, are the great white, bigeye thresher (14-feet), seven gill shark (10-feet), shorten mako shark (13-feet), greeneye shark (1.5 feet) and the\u00a0<strong>gentle giant, basking shark (25 feet)\u2014sadly, only a few of these remain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were once 3,000-5,000 basking sharks in BC; however, in a heinous act of government shark genocide,\u00a0the gentle giant was nearly wiped out by the federal government eradication program from 1945 to 1970. Ottawa steered vessels with sharp blades on the bow throughout the \u00a0BC coast to kill as many basking sharks as possible because they might &#8220;interfere&#8221; with commercial fishing nets. The life of a tree in old growth BC coastal forests [from seedling to old, fallen tree, rotting on the forest floor (providing nutrients to new seedling)] is 1500 years! The BC government allows very few trees to reach this lifespan and our old growth forests are vanishing at an alarming rate. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/1.3683750\">old growth forests on Vancouver Island<\/a> are in dire condition! Imagine, getting the best of both worlds: old growth BC forests and the Pacific Ocean as my playgrounds!
