We booked the trip only a week before we arrived in Cuba. We had been researching tropical locales to visit and suddenly Cuba fit the bill. I wanted to visit before the death of Fidel Castro (although, he may live for a very long time as he and all his siblings\u00a0seem to have a longevity gene).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mixhart.ca\/blog\/?attachment_id=2766\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2766\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2766\" alt=\"P7070071\" src=\"http:\/\/mixhart.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070071-1024x530.jpg\" width=\"630\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070071-1024x530.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070071-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We will start with the\u00a0<strong>beautiful beaches<\/strong>. Peter and I stayed on the\u00a0<strong>best beach in Varadero<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>Hotel Internacional<\/strong>. It is fitting that\u00a0<strong>Hotel Internacional<\/strong>\u00a0has the very best beach&#8211;endless white sand&#8211;as it is the oldest hotel that still exists in Varadero. It was built in 1950 to accommodate the glitter and gangsters of a pre-revolution Cuba. In its glory days the hotel guests included the\u00a0<strong>Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Walt Disney<\/strong>. Today its guest list is just as spectacular as it accommodated none other than\u00a0<em>the<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Modernista Mama.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2761\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 630px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mixhart.ca\/blog\/?attachment_id=2761\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2761\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2761\" alt=\"P7070050\" src=\"http:\/\/mixhart.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070050-1024x732.jpg\" width=\"630\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070050-1024x732.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070050-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Peter on Varadero Beach.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I always felt safe on the beaches, day or night. Our hotel was very quiet; we lucked out. In the early morn and late evening, I felt perfectly safe walking alone on the beach. During the day, the security was top notch&#8211;Cuban men with walkie-talkies watching and other men with binoculars watching the off shore sailboats. There are no motor boats and no jet skis in Cuba&#8211;only sailboats, kite surfers and wind surfers&#8211;bliss.<\/p>\n<p><em>*How I long for a more pastoral beach in Canada&#8211;particularly in my home town. Lake Okanagan is crowded with oversized, powerful, loud motor boats with even louder stereos (many owned by young drug money) and jet skis driven by reckless masses.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2760\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 630px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mixhart.ca\/blog\/?attachment_id=2760\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2760\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2760\" alt=\"P7070038\" src=\"http:\/\/mixhart.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070038-1024x750.jpg\" width=\"630\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070038-1024x750.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070038-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070038-520x382.jpg 520w, https:\/\/blog.mixhart.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/P7070038-260x191.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Modernista Mama soaking up the Caribbean.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our hotel room was on the top floor (5th) and our balcony faced the spectacular beach and turquoise Caribbean. I would run down the back marble staircase of the hotel (with a full wall of windows from top to bottom that faced the ocean) and slip onto the beach in less than a minute. <strong>No one understood why I never took the elevator<\/strong>, the maid said to me in her Spanish accent, &#8220;But<em> why<\/em>? You would ever know of their existence unless you put on a snorkel mask and suddenly realize the sea is full of them! I was stung on the knuckle two days ago. It hurt less than a bee sting so I ignored it. It seemed like nothing as I have been\u00a0<a title=\"Once Bitten\u2014Twice Shy\" href=\"http:\/\/mixhart.ca\/blog\/?p=477\">bitten by a jelly fish in the South China Sea<\/a>,\u00a0which was very painful. However, yesterday I noticed a growth of skin that formed a nodule on my knuckle&#8211;my body had completely walled off the toxin.
