\"IMG_0199\"<\/a>This past weekend my teen daughter Tabs entered an apple pie baking competition at the KAG\u2014Kelowna Art Gallery (the Okanagan is famous for fruit orchards, especially apples). Coincidentally, at the same event, I was called out by a local radio station for being a 40-something Harry Potter fashion geek (my words).<\/p>\n

Tabs decided to enter the pie baking competition as she loves to bake and is an amazing chef (her pastry skills are divine); also, because the\u00a0proceeds from the event went towards art programming at the local gallery.<\/p>\n

As I was strutting to and from the Art Gallery helping Tabs deliver the apple pie (and passing by an on-location radio booth), one of \u00a0the DJs pointed to the crest on my chest and asked what house I was from: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin…? I laughed and said, “Ralph.” My rugby inspired shirt\/dress was from Ralph Lauren. The DJs thought this was hilarious and said that they had just outted themselves as Harry Potter Geeks.<\/p>\n

If they’re Harry Potter Geeks, I thought, what does it say about my fashion? Do I look like a 40-something Harry Potter Fashion Freak? The whole ordeal was humorous. The greatest thing is that Pip was in the car being driven to a soccer game by her father and \u00a0over heard the entire exchange on the radio, not knowing that it was her mother who was being accused of sporting a Harry Potter outfit!<\/p>\n

Tabs’ apple pie was the apple pie of the century!\u00a0The crust was divine and flaky and the gala apple filling perfect (the gala variety of apple was created in the Okanagan and is my favourite apple). Tabs even carved her signature pi symbol into the crust (Tabs loves math).<\/p>\n

All categories of pies had local chefs as judges except for the under 18 category. Thus, Tabs’ pie judges were local celebrities; which, turned out to be unfortunate as Tabs’ pie did not win and believe me, it should have. A chef would have rewarded its fine qualities. Tabs not only used Okanagan gala apples but also a heritage Okanagan apple pie recipe from the Okanagan Orchard Museum (will post recipe in future post if we get requests).<\/p>\n

However, a blue ribbon isn’t every thing. Tabs is an amazing baker and has no fear of competition;\u00a0thus,the experience was good for her. \u00a0She also gets bonus points for surviving being seen with me and my stylin’ Harry Potterish outfit!<\/p>\n
